MacBook Air ship dates on Apple's own store have slipped to the back half of August, or September for some configurations, and retailers describe supply as more constrained than they can ever recall, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
The price has already moved twice
Apple's M5 refresh in March 2026 doubled the base storage to 512GB and set RAM at 16GB across the line, raising the 13-inch base price from $999 to $1,099. A second increase followed in June 2026, taking that same 13-inch base configuration to $1,299. Apple delayed its usual back-to-school promotion from June because of the supply crunch, and is exploring Chinese memory suppliers, at least for devices sold in China.
The root cause is upstream
This is the same AI-driven memory shortage this site has already covered from the chip side: Samsung and SK Hynix both warned the shortage persists into 2027 and beyond, driven by AI data centers consuming HBM and DRAM capacity that used to go toward consumer devices. HBM for AI accelerators uses roughly 3 times the wafer capacity per gigabyte that standard DRAM does, which is what's pulling fab capacity away from products like the MacBook Air.
